Virtual Sketch Date

12x9

Today is the day we have to have our submissions posted for the September virtual sketch date.

The reference image was a still life of peonies against a black background.

Here is mine.

I started putting in the dark background and then had a change of heart, finding it too overpowering.

This was a tough one for me.

I had difficulty with the vase and all the light and reflections going on. I think I may have overworked it. I will try a second attempt, but I wanted to post this now to get it in on time.

The kids and I are battling over computer time. It seems Runescape is taking priority right now, ....it may be time for another craft.

see you later

  2. I think you have made a beautiful painting. We all have struggled with the background and I love the way you have solved it. Oh, gosh, that bowl was a difficult one - again you have done a beautiful job. I love your way with watercolour.

  3. Gail, I like your colorful background. It goes well with the delicate petals. That vase was tricky but yours works well. I like the strong blue shadows in the petals too.

  5. I really like this one. The transition from light to dark in the background works very well against the paleness of the vase and flowers.

  9. Your painting is so very pretty.

The more I visit with all the Virtual Sketch Daters, the more I am convinced that this was a tough reference photo.

  11. I really like your background and the way the left side of the flower melts into the background. It is so interesting to see different approaches to the same subject.

  12. Gail, I love the way the light from the left bathes the flower. I'm SO glad you had a change of heart about the dark background. I really like the way you've interpreted the entire subject.
