How to Make Paper Easter Lilies

So Easter is fast approaching and you need a quick and easy art project for the bulletin board............give these paper lilies a try.

The lily is made from the traced hand of the student.

These were made by Grade 1.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

- white paper
- green paper
- large piece of pastel colored paper
- scissors
- pencil
- glue
- yellow tissue paper, (optional)

PROCEDURE:
Take your large piece of colored paper and trace out an egg shape.  With Grade 1 we had templates.  Cut out the egg shape.  This design is actually inspired by some Pysanky eggs we were admiring.
On the white paper trace around your hand 3 separate times.
Cut the hand shapes out.
Roll each hand shape into a cone and tack with glue.
With the pencil curl the edges of each finger or petal.

Cut leaves and stems out of the green paper.  Glue into place on the egg and then glue the lilies on.
If you want you can add yellow centers or stamens to your lily.  Cut the tissue paper into strips and twist.
Add a dab of glue........
and stick into the center of the lily.

That's it.

Only one more week of school till Easter vacation!
See you next time.

Easy Easter Art Project

I had honestly thought I posted this project years ago....oh well this one's for you Kim!  (you'll notice a theme here with the last post)

I have been immersed in Pysanky classes for about 2 weeks now.  Usually not all students will finish at the same time.  You have your ones who race to the finish, those who try to take as much time as they can, and then everyone in between.

As the kids finish their Pysanky egg they then can complete this pastel resist paper egg.

You then have a nice display for your bulletin board.

This is Grade 1.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

- white paper, use heavy sketch or wc
- pencil and eraser
- oil pastels
- disk tempera paint
- scissors

PROCEDURE:
Draw a large egg shape on your paper.  For the younger grades you can provide them with a template.

Sketch out your own Pysanky design in pencil.  You want fairly large shapes.

Use the oil pastels to add some color to your egg.  Bright colors show up best including white.

Keep some areas of the egg uncolored.

You can also outline the egg shape.

Using watery disk tempera (a wash) paint over the entire egg.  The pastel areas will resist the paint.

When dry cut the egg out.

That's it.  Before you know it you'll have dozens of decorated eggs.

Here are some pictures of our Pysanky in process.

This is Grade 2.

Here are the Grade 3 eggs waiting for the wax to be taken off.

And even though I'm teaching Pysanky all day long I come home and work on my own eggs with my kids as well.
I'll have some completed Pysanky pictures for you Friday.  In the meantime why not do a large pastel resist paper egg!

See you soon.

Student Work - Easter

So here are the Easter Bonnet Portraits the Grade 2's completed yesterday.
Click on Picture to see Larger.

and here is the Pysanky by Grade 3.  They follow my tutorial found here.

These are the eggs Grade 2 made with their intro to Pysanky.  I let them make their own designs as they are just getting a feel for it and then next year they try the pattern.
Incredible work everyone! Have a Happy Easter and we'll start on all the Mother's Day Projects next week.

Paper Mache Easter Eggs

Here is a batch of paper mache eggs I finished this weekend.

Paper mache is a good option for kids, the egg is virtually accident proof (no breakage) and are good keepers once sealed.

Giveaway Results and Fluffy Chicks

First off we'll have the giveaway for Margaret Peot's new book " Inkblot".

Drumroll please................

(why does Ryan have orange hair and a tie on...I'll explain in a bit)

(Click on picture to see larger)

...the winner is Julie who wrote:

"Looks like an awesome book, and one I would like to add to my library."
on April 14/2011

Congrats Julie!  Please email me your address and I'll arrange shipping of your new book.  In case you can't find my email on this blog it is thatartistwoman@shaw.ca

Thanks everyone for entering, I love your comments and if you didn't win maybe you'll come across the "Inkblot" book at the bookstore or library and fall in love with it too.

So it was "Mad Scientist" Day at school today.

My 2 boys got right in to it.

Ryan was Beaker from the Muppets but sadly no one knew who that was in his class.  We have the tv shows on dvd and the kids love them as much as I did plus it's nice to see those celebrity hosts when they were younger.....my daughter Allison couldn't believe it was Elton John from the 1st season...."He looks so silly Mom!"

On to a quick Easter project that Grade 1 did today.  We needed something fast for the bulletin board so they made these fluffy chicks.

Easter Bonnet Portrait

Here is an Easter art project that combines a 3 dimensional element in the hat.

I am currently working on this with Grade 2 and will have some student work to show you shortly.

I was reading "Albert the Albatross" with my son Jeff and I started thinking about birds on hats. (Albert ends up on a ladies hat for awhile) With Easter coming up it seemed a good fit.

Bunny Willows

Here is a really cute craft I'm calling "Bunny Willows".

I was at Dollaramma and they had these great packages of pastel colored pompoms, which of course I bought thinking I would come up with something.

The kids had a great time making these and I did this craft with both the Beavers troop (5-8 yr olds) and Kindergarten.

Materials Required:

a branch
large pompoms
med. pompoms
teeny tiny pompoms
tiny googly eyes or black beads
scraps of felt
tacky glue
scissors

Take a large pompom and spread it apart a bit.  Apply some glue.

Find a good spot on your branch...stick the pompom on and give it a good squeeze.

Continue to add large pompoms everywhere you want a bunny.  The pompoms look great on the branch by themselves too....... so you don't have to make everyone a bunny if you don't want to.

Take your scraps of felt and cut out a set of ears.  I did this ahead of time for the kids.  I made the ears all one piece for easy gluing.

Apply some glue to the bottom of the ears and stick on a medium pompom.

Add 2 eyes and a teeny tiny pompom for a nose.

Then glue this head onto your large pompom.

Finally you can add another teeny tiny pompom to the back for a tail.

Give it a try and I'll see you soon from Maui!
