March Lion or Lamb Art Project

Well I'm back....had a bit of a mid winter break over Teacher's Convention in Palm Springs.

I'm currently finishing all the Penguin projects with Grade 1 (hope to have some pictures later this week).

Grade 2 has just started this March "Lion or Lamb" project and based on our weather forecast for the next few days here is Calgary I suspect we will have a lot of Lions on that bulletin board!

For this project the kids are creating the papers to make their Lion"s mane or shaggy Lamb coat.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

- watercolor or heavy sketch paper
- book pages, newspaper, maps, (whatever you have around)
- tempera paint in blue, white, black, red, orange, yellow, and brown
- brown kraft paper
- pastels
- white pencil crayon
- glue
- scissors

Tape off your watercolor or heavy sketch paper.

I wanted an intense blue for the background...here I'm using acrylic but at school.......

I mixed up some powder tempera to get an intense color.....We were doing 2 projects here, finishing a city skyline pastel resist and then starting on our backgrounds for this project.

After the kids painted the backgrounds I had them paint some newspaper in red, yellow, orange, brown, and white.

We will be sharing these papers.

Once our painted papers are dry we start to add more texture to them.

Here we are stamping circles from a paper roll.

This is just the cap off the glue container making some great small circles.

Add stripes, squiggly lines, sponging, bubble wrap.......

Add some dry brushing in another color.....

and of course the kids favorite splatter!

Take your brown kraft paper and sketch out a lion or lamb face.  You want it to be smaller than your background with room for the shaggy mane or coat.

Make sure to provide some reference photos ....there are lots in google images.

Using oil or chalk pastels add some color and definition to your face.

Cut out your face, place on your background and trace it with a white pencil crayon.

This will let you build your mane in the right place.

Cut out some strips, squares, and rectangles and start building your mane.  Glue into place.

When you have filled it out enough glue the face into place.

Finally add a few pieces of your mane on top of the face.  This makes it look more cohesive.

Here is my lamb sample....I know a lamb probably wouldn't have horns right away but I was experimenting!  UPDATE: The kids at school thought it looked more like a goat so I gotta come up with a better lamb sample.  Thank goodness it's lions all around.

I hope not everyone has a Lion and I'll see you next time.

  1. I like this one very much. I was looking for something to do with the experiments the children made with paint (splashing paint, blowing paint, stamping, ...)
